Essay Coaching

Finding the story only you can tell

You have already lived the story. My job is to help you tell it.

I am an experienced cook with what some might call a cookbook problem. My shelves are full of them, and I never buy one without reading the recipe descriptions first. The ingredients matter, the photos help, but what sells me is the writing at the top of the page, that small paragraph that makes you feel like you can already taste the dish. A great college essay works the same way. The ingredients are there in every application, and you have been building them for years. You earned the grades and the activities one choice at a time. The relationships you built along the way become the letters of recommendation that give your application its texture, colour, and shape. What makes it memorable, what makes a reader sit up, though, is the feeling that a real person is on the page.

Admissions officers read thousands of essays a year, and most blur together. I have been editing students' essays for over twenty years, and I can still picture the standout ones from when I first started. They were about ordinary moments, but spoke to my heart as much as my mind. The story was always already there. It always is. They just needed help telling it.

Let me help you find that story and tell it well. You will develop a new perspective on yourself, improve your writing skills (who doesn't want that?), and get better at tackling big, complex tasks by breaking them down into something manageable. What if I told you that it will also be fun?

Essay coaching is not all I do. I also help students and working professionals with personal statements, motivational letters, and career-related documents, and I support graduate students through their PhD proposals and dissertations.
